Code of Conduct

Statement of Purpose

Our commitment is to promote a safe, caring and orderly school where students and staff can learn and work effectively.  We value diversity and guard the dignity and rights of all members of the school and the community.   We insist upon an environment that is free from discrimination as outlined in the BC Human Rights Code.  The law prohibits discriminations based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, gender identity or expression, sex or sexual orientation.  We will promote and support these values in both in-person and electronic interactions with others.

We believe that a personalized approach to help each individual to understand themselves and others will lead to increased self-esteem, increased self-awareness, and decreased behavioural problems.  To that end, we focus on a preventative approach to conduct breaches rather than a punitive approach to conduct breaches.

Conduct Expectations

Students are expected to conduct themselves as respectful citizens both at school and in the community. Any conduct that adversely affects the school shall be considered a breach of the School Code of Conduct.  Likewise, students and staff are expected to adhere to school district policy and any breach of that policy will be considered a breach of school conduct.

Acceptable Conduct

Examples of acceptable conduct are, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring that the educational rights of all members of the school community are respected
  • Respecting the right of every person in the school to feel safe
  • Promoting an environment of understanding, respect, and appreciation and accepting of differences
  • Setting high standards for personal achievement and applying good effort in all areas
  • Respecting the property and space of others
  • Informing an adult, in a timely manner, of any known bullying, harassment or intimidation
  • Wearing clothing appropriate to the school dress code
  • Being a positive ambassador for the school throughout the community
  • Respecting school property and working as a team to ensure that areas such as the common kitchen are maintained

 Unacceptable Conduct

Examples of unacceptable conduct include, but are not limited to:

  • Interfering with a safe, caring and orderly environment
  • Interfering with the learning of others
  • Dishonesty (plagiarism, cheating, lying, etc.)
  • Not following rules at off-campus, school-related events
  • Bullying, cyber bullying, harassment, intimidation, threatening, harassing, or physical violence
  • Retaliation against a person who has reported incidents to staff
  • Publishing or displaying anything that is discriminatory according to Human Rights legislation


Rising Expectation

As students mature and become more positive role models in the community, they will gain a deeper sense of pride and belonging to their school. Their example will help guide younger students in reaching their potential within a safe, caring and orderly school. As students mature, they will become more aware of their personal responsibility and model this behaviour for the newer students.

The school recognizes that conduct issues are merely a symptom of other problems and we strive to create personalized programs to help students cope with those problems.  Although there may be suspensions for behaviour that compromises the safety of others, the school will use a variety of proactive and/or restorative techniques to reduce the desire for misconduct and to have appropriate consequences for misconduct.


When there is a breach of the School Code of Conduct, school officials may have a responsibility to advise the following:

  • Parents/guardians of offenders and victims
  • School district officials  as required by school district policy
  • Police and/or other community agencies  as required by law
  • All parents when deemed to be important to reassure members of the school community


Because ACE takes an integrative approach with social service and mental health agencies, representatives from these organizations will be aware of ongoing issues, thus they will be a part of the process after a breach has occurred.


The ACE Code of Conduct is reviewed annually with students, staff and PAC.
